Leveraging everyday language experiences in immigrant communities for heritage language maintenance

by Marjorie Faulstich Orellana (UCLA School of Information and Education)

In this talk I suggest how heritage language educators can learn about the everyday language experiences of youth in immigrant communities and then leverage them for the support of heritage languages. I focus in particular on the skills acquired from brokering language (translating/interpreting) for others, and in shifting language appropriately for different audiences, contexts, purposes and relationships.
