Heritage Spanish: Language Research and Pedagogy

by Julio Torres (University of California, Irvine), Silvina Montrul (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), Melissa Bowles (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), and Kim Potowski (The University of Illinois at Chicago)

The goal of this panel is to share a summary of language acquisition/pedagogy research and practices that have been mostly conducted with heritage Spanish. Ideally, the information ought to serve as a guide of the issues at stake for scholars working with lesser studied heritage languages. The presenters will cover research and practice areas pertaining to heritage language acquisition, instructed heritage language development, dual language programs and the goals of teaching practices. The presenters will address two questions: (1) What do we know based on current evidence and/or practices for each area? (2) What do we still need to know and/or improve to advance each area?
