Center-Sponsored Courses & the Israel Studies Minor

The Center sponsors Israel Studies courses every quarter on that cover a wide range of topics on the country and region. These classes are hosted by different departments across campus and typically count towards those departments' majors, but they may also count toward your Diversity Requirement. All of our sponsored courses also count toward the Israel Studies minor.

Virtual & In-Person Events

The Center hosts and co-sponsors a diverse range of virtual and in-person events during the academic year that are free and open to all students and the wider community. The Center also organizes events that are specifically meant for UCLA students, such as our monthly Lunch & Learn series—a monthly luncheon where students can ask questions and discuss topics about Israel, including controversial ones, with scholars from the UCLA Y&S Nazarian Center. The Center's events events include discussions with academics, authors, and artists; lectures by prominent guest speakers on topics related to Israeli culture, society, and history; and musical, dance and theatrical performances.

Study Abroad Program & Travel Grants
The Center offers scholarships to undergraduate students interested in studying abroad in Israel. Funding is available to students from all disciplines and backgrounds.

Student Fellowships & Other Funding Opportunities
Former Undergraduate Fellows presenting award to Dr. Sharon Nazarian, President of the Y&S Nazarian Family Foundation.
Each year, the Center selects 2-4 Goldstine Undergraduate Fellows and 1 Sigman Graduate Fellow. The Undergraduate Fellowship provides the selected students with an opportunity to gain professional work experience, improve their organizational and research skills, and learn more about modern Israel outside the classroom. Goldstine Undergraduate Fellows receive a stipend of $500 per quarter. The Graduate Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding UCLA graduate student with a scholarly interest in the field of Israel Studies. The fellow serves as a research assistant, primarily carrying out research for the Center director, and also assists with the Nazarian Center’s bi-annual publication, Currents: Briefs on Contemporary Israel, and with organizing the annual Undergraduate Scholars Conference in Israel Studies. Apart from the fellowships, the Center also offers a number of other opportunities for students to develop their academic interests in Israel, including research funding.

Undergraduate Scholars Conference in Israel Studies
First place winner of the 4th annual conference, Jonah Fried from McGill University, presenting his paper virtually.
This annual conference is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students (Bachelor's degree programs) to present and discuss their research on modern Israel in any academic discipline. Students selected to showcase their work at the conference will be invited to give a 10 to 12-minute presentation of their work and participate in a moderated Q&A with their peers.
