About the Event
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Sinai Campaign, Ilan Troen will discuss its historical and contemporary significance. This talk will begin with a focus on the war itself: what caused it and what we have come to learn about it given the initial secrecy, the nature of the alliances Israel developed and international opposition, and the aims that were achieved and frustrated. Troen will also assess its significance within the history of the Israel-Arab conflicts and suggest its long-term lessons. Special attention will be given to the role of key actors, to the issue of just and unjust wars, and the conduct of wars by democracies.
About the Speakers
Ilan Troen is professor emeritus of the Lopin Chair of Modern History at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and of the Stoll Family Chair in Israel Studies at Brandeis University. He was founding director of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis and founding academic director of the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism at BGU. He is a past president of the Association for Israel Studies from which he received its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. He is the founding editor of both the leading journal Israel Studies and the book series Perspectives on Israel Studies (Indiana University Press). His most recent book Israel/Palestine in World Religions: Whose Promised Land? (Palgrave Macmillan) was awarded the Bernard Lewis Prize.
Professor Steven E. Zipperstein (moderator) is the Director of the UCLA Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies. He teaches in the Department of Public Policy at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. He is a Visiting Professor at Tel Aviv University Law School and a member of the Adjunct Faculty at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. He serves as a Distinguished Senior Scholar at the UCLA Center for Middle East Development and as a Senior Fellow at The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation in the Netherlands. Zipperstein is the author of three peer-reviewed books, most recently The Legal Case for Palestine: A Critical Assessment (Routledge, 2024).
