Panel and Discussion: Hmong
The Hmong panel for the Heritage Language Research Institute at UW Madison consists of Madison Hmong community members, including parents, language teachers, heritage language educators from both Wisconsin and Minnesota, curriculum specialists, high school students, and a doctoral candidate. This panel will discuss successes and challenges related to Hmong Heritage Language programs from their inception in the early 2000s to the present day.
Dr. Joe Gothard, Superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District, will serve as the introductory speaker and share the district’s vision and mission for the Hmong Heritage Language Program currently hosted at Lakeview Elementary School.
To fully understand Hmong literacy and foster a productive and meaningful discussion, it will be situated within its social, cultural, and historical contexts.
Time will be allocated for panelists to share their perspectives and experiences related to Hmong literacy, language reclamation and identity, the application of the Simple View of Reading and its impacts on reading comprehension and oral language development, as well as assessment, teacher preparation, and instructional resources. Past and current Madison East High School students will offer testimonials about how learning the Hmong language has shaped their sense of belonging and academic success.
