Tutorial: Planning Acquisition Experiments

By Misha Becker (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)

In this tutorial, I will describe and demonstrate several widely-used methodologies for conducting experiments on language acquisition. These will include methods of studying language production and comprehension in children, and both on-line and off-line measures of language comprehension. Although the focus will be on methods used for studying children’s acquisition of language, we will also discuss the degree to which these methods can be adapted for use with older populations, including older children and adults. Considerations for working with bilingual and vulnerable populations will also be discussed.
